Teaching Philosophy

Few students will go on to become professional historians, but they will all practice a form of historical analysis on an almost daily basis for the duration of their lives. I teach from the premise that everyone benefits from learning how to think about life through a historical lens. As a history teacher, I aim to provide students with a set of cognitive skills that will empower them in whatever path they choose. In addition to cultivating excellent writing and researching abilities, I show students how to contextualize current institutions and events against the backdrop of the past. I push them to see how the local has always been embedded in regional, national, and global contexts, and to perceive the nuances and subtleties in multi-causal events.
